What does a company gain by offering employees shares in the company?

My husband was given 5 shares of his company in 2007. His employer is claiming that the business only profited $60k. Can an employer be hiding assests? Is there financial benefits by offering employees shares?

He should look up the companies SEC quarterly filings (which are online by law). You can find out a lot of things there (executive salaries & compensation, etc). It probably has there whether an independant arbiter looked over the books.

What is the cheapest way to sell shares?

Is there a website where i can find out how much the shares are worth? Some are really old around 1991 onwards. Is there a website which can convert shares into a price value of how much they are worth now?

I assume you have physical Share Certificates … all Shares are now traded 'electronically' (Share Certs. are no longer issued) … very few Brokers now accept Certs.

I'm going to guess you will have to go to your Bank .. even so they are likely to charge you £25 to process each Certificate ..

All UK shares are traded via the Stock Exchange .. enter the Company name in one of the on-line quote systems for some idea of the Share value (for example, see below)

What happens to your shares if a hostile takeover bid is made for the company you invested in?

A company I invested in has just had a takeover offer. I've never owned shares of any company that had this kind of situation before. What exactly happens in this situation?

It depends on how the takeover offer is structured. Sometimes the offer will involve buying all outstanding shares of the target company at a certain price. Sometimes you will get a certain number of shares in the new combined company, based on how many you currently own. And sometimes its a mix of cash and shares. Either way, you should expect the current share price to rise up towards whatever the offer price was, if its a credible offer. You might want to consider the offer- is it likely to go through? If yes, and you are happy with the terms, then you should probably hold on and get whats being offered. If not, you might do well to sell quickly on the bump you are likely receiving at the moment.
