Geoffrey Heal: Corporate Social Responsibility and the TRI

The EPA’S annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI)report lists the toxics released by every U.S. company that employs 10 or more people. A study shows, says Heal, that upon the release of this report, companies with a bad TRI rating find that their share price falls. Thus pollution is a real cost to companies.

As we discussed in a previous video, dark pools are becoming ever more prevalent.

I’m Leisa Bugge and this is the second video in a series on dark pools.

Since our last video just over a month ago, there have been several articles written in notable publications, including two in the Wall Street Journal.

With our Corporate Clients asking more questions since our last dark pools video we thought it timely to talk about the topic further and open the discussion to new venues.

One common question is “What do dark pools mean for my stock price”. Good question, and while the answer is not straight forward we believe that it is worth discussing.

Do dark pools now call into question the Efficient Market Hypothesis? With broker-dealer owned, independent and exchange owned dark pools, does it matter which dark pool the stock is traded in?

We know many different investors use these trading venues, most notably secretive hedge funds, but also the plain vanilla institutions that populate the top of your shareholder lists.

The IR Professional and others alike should do what they can to educate themselves on this topic, because as we said this trading venue is becoming more widely used as the days go on.

For example, the big news last week was the Wall Street Journal reporting the NYSE and NASDAQ will be allowing clients access to dark pools as a way to increase revenues.

Now this is something that must affect a stock’s price, or is it?

Does it mean that I got to "sell" the stock 1st then "buy" when the price drop?

Yeap. Its called short selling. You can also use buy put options which go up in price when the underlying stock goes down. Read about it first befor you do it.

Motorists queue ahead of China fuel price rise - 20 June 08

On Friday Beijing hiked the cost of fuel by 18-percent. As a result -on the other side of the globe in New York - oil prices fell by almost five-dollars. Traders are worried that Chinese consumers won’t buy as much petrol - dampening global demand for oil. Al Jazeera’s Laura Kyle reports on how China’s price rise is providing hope for the rest of globe.

If the stock price is lower than the stock option price, is there anyway to get value when leaving the company

I own about 6,000 shares of stock that I will now have to exercise as I have left the company. The stock price is now less than the option purchase price. Can this still be of value to me, or do I just let it go?

I have options with Nautilus at $32 a share, when I left the company the stock was at $3 a share…worthless

What does it mean if a stock price stops and is on hold all day?

an investment via E*TRADE normally has a refresh every 20 minutes, but today the stock price stopped at 12:15. The stock shows an opening price for the day. Stops at 12:15, and nothing further. What would cause a stoppage in trading?

Two possible answers.

1 - Did it “stop” or was there just no volume in terms of trades? If no one is buying and selling, no trades occur.

2 - Pending news. This would be a halt in trading and no one can buy/sell. Halt’s occur when news is coming out that is material in some amount of magnitude.
