How old do I legally have to be to own shares of stocks? I am ready to invest but I am only 16 years old…?

Any tips?

You can own stocks at any age (ie: if a parent or relative gifts them to you in trust) however, in order to buy and sell stocks you must be 18 in most places. Most or all brockerages will not open an account for someone under 18.

If you really are ready to start investing, try to get a parent or guardian to open up an account and conduct the stock trades for you, under your direction. Have something in writing from that person that they will hand over the money or account to you when you turn 18.

You can own them at any age, I'm fairly sure to use an online broker and invest on your own you'll need to be 18. There are many things you can't really do until you're 18 and can legally sign contracts. Talk to your parents about opening an account and using your money IMO. GL

In the US, you have to be 18 to sign a contract. However, you can buy one share of stock as a gift from the internet. Such as: http://www.shareinaframe.com/

They let you buy one share w/o an account (although they're really pricey). However, from your question, it sounds as you're implying buying/selling them regularly. Call a broker in your area and inquire.
