The companies behind the stocks can affect the economy by what they do or don't do. For example, are they growing and hiring people (positive affect) or are they closing plants and laying off people (negative affect). Your question is more of an Economics 101 question for which there are hundreds of books addressing the subject and as many opinions about what factors affect the economy directly or indirectly and why.
